‘The Beginning of the Diamond Star Ranch’

Peter Thoberg was born in the Province of Hanover Germany in 1855. Under his father’s instruction he   learned the blacksmiths trade and at sixteen years of age he started out in the world for himself. In     pursuit of his occupation as blacksmith, he visited many towns in Europe. In 1873, at eighteen years of  age, he crossed the ocean and settled in Davenport, Iowa where he remained for several years. It was  there he was married Caroline “Carrie” Kuehn.

In 1879, the Thobergs came to Colorado, settling in Leadville, where Peter had charge of the sampling department of the Grant Smelter for three years. Afterward he spent two years or so in South Park, coming from there to his future home in Eagle County in September of 1885.

Little improvement had been made in the county; the town of Eagle had not yet been started. He took up land adjoining the village of Eagle and carried on general ranch pursuits, working industriously and faithfully to place his property under first class improvement, developing the land from rough sagebrush into a splendid productive ranch. The museum is housed in the original barn.

The Thobergs remained on the ranch until 1904 when they moved into the town of Eagle and built a home. At one time, they owned most of the town site. Mr. Thoberg donated the land where the county courthouse is located today.

The Thobergs had three daughters, Mabel, Alice and Blanche.

The family sold the ranch to the Sherman brothers, Jesse and George, in 1914.It then became the Diamond S Ranch.

In 1922, George and Jess Sherman sold the ranch to a wealthy Chicago businessman, Clyde F Lloyd, whose wife Adele found great pleasure in building her ideal of a home, with a decorative white fence and trellis leading up to the house. The house burned down not many years after it was built, but the young apple trees growing just to the right of the fence are still here today. When Mrs. Lloyd died in 1929, she was laid to rest under those very apple trees.
